Key Takeaways
- In Social Media Examiner’s 2026 survey of 681 marketers, Claude is the platform marketers call most important (42%), just ahead of ChatGPT (39%). In 2024, ChatGPT led 68% to 5%.
- ChatGPT is still the most used platform at 81%. Claude is in 65% of marketing stacks and Gemini in 60%.
- 73% of marketers use AI every day, up from 37% in 2024, and 85% pay for AI tools in some form.
- The best AI stack for marketers gives each platform its own job: Claude for copywriting and decks, ChatGPT for images and research, Gemini for teams that work inside Google Workspace.
- Your buyers have spread out too. ChatGPT’s share of generative AI web traffic fell from 71.8% to 56.4% in 12 months, so AI visibility has to be checked on more than one platform.
For most marketing teams, “using AI” used to mean opening ChatGPT. The 2026 data shows that habit has changed. Marketers use AI daily, they work across 2 or 3 platforms, and the one they now rate most important is Claude. ChatGPT still has the widest reach, but marketers keep it for specific tasks and give their most important writing to Claude.
AI Adoption in Marketing: What 681 Marketers Told Social Media Examiner
Social Media Examiner’s third annual AI Marketing Industry Report surveyed 681 marketers. Its sample leans small: 60% of respondents work in businesses of 10 people or fewer, and 63% are based in the US, with an even split between B2B and B2C. Keep that profile in mind when you read the trends.
AI adoption in marketing has moved from occasional to daily in 2 years:
- 73% of marketers use AI every day, against 61% in 2025 and 37% in 2024.
- 90% use it at least weekly.
- Only 7% rarely or never use it, down from 23% in 2024.
The report flags one limit itself: the 2025 edition asked about “generative AI,” while the 2026 edition asked about “AI for work”. So treat the year-on-year comparison as directional. Even so, a 36-point jump in daily use is hard to explain by wording alone.
Money has followed. 85% of marketers pay for AI tools in some form, and 53% spend their own money on them.
ChatGPT for Marketers: The Most Used, No Longer the Most Important

ChatGPT is in 81% of marketing stacks, yet only 39% of marketers call it their most important platform. Fewer than half of its users rate it first.
We read ChatGPT as the entry point. It’s the first AI tool most marketers tried, and 68% of marketers with under 1 year of AI experience use it. So it stays installed, and marketers still open it for specific jobs. The work they care about most has moved elsewhere.
That gives ChatGPT a new role in the stack. It’s still the default first account, and its image generation is still the strongest mainstream option we’ve tested. Experienced teams now write on other platforms.
Claude for Marketers: Why Experienced Teams Rate It First
42% of marketers name Claude their most important AI platform, up from 5% in 2024. Claude’s user base among marketers grew from 18% to 65% over the same period. Put those 2 numbers together and about 64% of the marketers who use Claude rate it as their main tool, against about 48% for ChatGPT (39 out of 81).
Experience makes the pattern stronger:
- 76% of marketers with 3 or more years of AI experience use Claude, against 46% of those with less than 1 year.
- 68% of marketers say they want to learn more about Claude. ChatGPT comes last of the big 3 on that question, at 44%.
The B2B and B2C split matters too. B2B marketers name Claude most important at 48%, against 30% in B2C. B2C marketers still lean ChatGPT, 44% against 32%. If you sell to businesses, nearly half of your peers have already made Claude their main tool.
Claude for marketers is the choice of people who’ve tried several platforms. The report doesn’t ask why they moved, so the next section is our own split.
The Best AI Stack for Marketers: Which Platform Does Which Job
“I’m not a marketer per se, but I use these tools every day, and each one has a different role for me. Claude is my first choice for copywriting. Claude Design handles my decks, motion, and infographics. ChatGPT was the first platform I used, and its image generation is still the best mainstream option I’ve tried, so that’s where I go for mockups and images. Gemini is the one I don’t personally use, but I understand why marketers do: a lot of businesses run inside Google Workspace, and Gemini has strong multimodal capabilities.”
Adrien Thomas, co-founder of Crescendo
The products themselves have been specialising. Claude Design builds decks, one-pagers and mockups, exports to PPTX, PDF or HTML, and connects to Canva, Adobe and other tools. Anthropic now includes it in every Claude plan, including Free. Gemini sits inside Gmail, Docs, Sheets and Slides, and Google says Workspace has over 3 billion users. For many marketing teams, Gemini is already open in the document they’re working on.
Here’s the split we’d recommend as the best AI stack for marketers:
| Marketing job | Platform | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Copywriting and long-form content | Claude | Our first choice for anything text-heavy, from LinkedIn posts to client deliverables |
| Decks, one-pagers and infographics | Claude Design | Builds the visuals and exports to PPTX, PDF or HTML |
| Images and mockups | ChatGPT | The best mainstream image generation we’ve tested |
| Research | ChatGPT | Good at reading a long report and pulling out the data that matters |
| Work inside Gmail, Docs, Sheets and Slides | Gemini | No switching tools for teams that live in Google Workspace |
This table covers the AI assistant layer of the stack. The rest of your marketing stack, from your CRM to your analytics and SEO tools, sits around it and doesn’t change.
How many platforms you need depends on the team. In the survey data, most respondents are in businesses of 10 people or fewer. For a solo marketer or a small team, 2 platforms cover most of the daily workflow: Claude for content and ChatGPT for images and research. Larger marketing teams, or those that live in Google Workspace, add Gemini and hand decks and brand visuals to Claude Design.
The usual objection is cost. The survey answers it: 85% of marketers already pay for AI and 53% pay out of their own pocket. The main individual plans cost about the same: ChatGPT Plus is $20 a month, Claude Pro is $20 ($17 a month billed annually), and Google AI Pro is $19.99. A second subscription is a smaller step than it looks, and it costs less than the time lost forcing 1 tool to do every job.
So a 2-platform stack starts at about $40 a month per person. For heavy daily use, the higher paid plans start at about $100: ChatGPT Pro from $100, Claude Max from $100, and Google AI Ultra at $99.99.
Where to Start If Your Team Only Uses ChatGPT
The report shows where marketers get stuck. Asked about their single biggest challenge, the most common answer was knowing how to use AI well. 95% already use AI for written content and 67% for images, but only 11% have AI agents in their regular workflow, and 24% are experimenting.
Here’s the order we’d follow:
- Start with the jobs that save time right away: content, visuals and research. That’s where a second platform pays off first.
- Add analysis next. SEO exports from Google Search Console, GA4 or your other marketing tools are where a marketer without an analyst gets the most from Claude or ChatGPT.
- Leave complex agents for later. 44% of marketers plan to adopt agents but haven’t started. If you build agents before your team has settled who uses which tool for what, you automate a process you haven’t defined yet. Once the split is settled and your workflow is stable, an automation tool like Zapier can connect your tools into simple workflows, for example turning a new campaign brief from a form into a first content draft in Claude.
Your Buyers Use Several AI Platforms Too

The survey measures marketers. Similarweb measures the wider population of AI users, and its numbers point the same way. Its September 2026 update on generative AI website traffic share shows:
- ChatGPT: 71.8% in October 2025, 56.4% in September 2026
- Gemini: 13.6% to 25.0%
- Claude: 2.3% to 9.6%
The split now looks settled around 3 platforms. ChatGPT gained back about 2 points between July and September 2026, and Claude has held near 10% for 3 months. Similarweb’s own analysis concludes that a ChatGPT-only strategy “reaches roughly half the market.”
These figures count visits to the AI platforms themselves. They measure where people ask their questions, which is a different number from the referral traffic each platform sends to your site. For SEO and AI visibility, usage is the one to watch, because it tells you where questions about your category are being asked.
Our priorities for clients haven’t changed at the top: ChatGPT and Google AI (AI Overviews and AI Mode) come first. The change is lower down. When Claude held 2.3% of generative AI traffic, it didn’t justify tracking budget. At 9.6%, we monitor it too. If you’re choosing a tool for that, our comparison of AI visibility tools covers the options.
Give Each Platform a Job
2 years ago, a marketing team deciding on AI was deciding whether to use ChatGPT. In 2026, 73% of marketers use AI daily and 85% pay for it, so the open question is which platform does which job. The most experienced marketers have answered it: Claude for the core work, ChatGPT for specific tasks, and Gemini when the team already lives in Google Workspace. The next step for most teams is automation: 44% of marketers plan to adopt AI agents but haven’t started yet.
Your buyers are making the same move. If they ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude about your category, you need to check your visibility on each one, because the answers differ by platform. That’s how we run GEO at Crescendo: ChatGPT and Google AI first, Claude added to the monitoring, and Clairon showing the gaps prompt by prompt.

FAQ
Is ChatGPT still the most used AI platform for marketers?
Yes. 81% of marketers use it, according to Social Media Examiner’s 2026 report. That’s down from a peak of 90% in 2025, and only 39% now call it their most important platform.
Which AI platform is best for copywriting?
In our daily use, Claude. It’s our first choice for text-heavy work, LinkedIn posts and client deliverables included. Results depend on your prompts and brand context, so give Claude and ChatGPT the same brief before you decide.
How many AI platforms should a marketing team use?
2 is the practical minimum. ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini each sit in 60% or more of marketing stacks, which means most marketers already use more than 1.
When does Gemini make sense for a marketing team?
When the team already works in Google Workspace. Gemini runs inside Gmail, Docs, Sheets and Slides, so the team doesn’t have to switch tools. Across the whole survey, 11% of marketers call Gemini their most important platform.
Which AI platforms should you track for AI visibility?
Start with ChatGPT and Google AI (AI Overviews and AI Mode). Then add Claude, which held 9.6% of generative AI web traffic in September 2026, according to Similarweb. A tool like Clairon tracks mentions and citations prompt by prompt on each platform, so you can compare them side by side.
