AI Visibility Audits: Scope, Deliverables and Agency Selection

What you'll Learn in this Post

An AI visibility audit examines how a brand appears in a defined sample of AI-generated answers, what sources those answers cite and which improvements are worth testing. Crescendo provides this work alongside SEO analysis. The scope should state the platforms, markets, questions and observation dates; no audit captures every possible answer.

This page explains what to request from an agency and how to assess the deliverables. It is written by Crescendo, a provider of Generative Engine Optimization services, rather than an independent ranking of suppliers.

What should an AI visibility audit include?

Workstream Deliverable Question it answers
Scope and buyer questions Prompt list grouped by intent, market and product Are we testing decisions relevant to our customers?
Baseline observations Dated answers, platform settings and repeat observations Where did our brand appear in this sample?
Competitor comparison Same-prompt observations for agreed competitors Which alternatives appear, and in what context?
Cited-source review Source URLs, page types and factual gaps What evidence can we inspect?
Website review Priority content, accessibility and internal-link findings Which changes can our team implement?
Roadmap Tasks, owners, effort estimates and validation steps What should happen next?

Platforms, markets and testing conditions

Agree which services to observe, such as ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google’s AI search experiences, where available. Specify the language, location settings, product mode and date. Some prompts will not produce an AI answer or citations. Record those outcomes instead of silently excluding them.

Use both branded questions and unbranded buying questions. Keep them separate: asking whether a named provider is suitable is different from seeing whether it appears spontaneously in a shortlist. A prompt set is a research sample, not a complete measure of real user demand.

An example report row

The following is an illustrative report structure, not a Crescendo client result.

Field Example entry
Question Which invoicing tools suit a small business selling in two currencies?
Observation Record the actual answer, date, platform and available settings
Brand outcome Mentioned or absent; recommended or simply discussed
Evidence Exact cited URLs and any incorrect product statements
Proposed action Clarify supported currencies and limitations on the relevant product page
Validation Confirm the page update, then repeat the same observation protocol

A cited source is inspectable evidence, but it does not reveal every factor used to produce an answer. Treat explanations of why a competitor appeared as hypotheses unless the evidence supports a stronger conclusion.

Free snapshot versus full audit

A free snapshot is a limited initial assessment intended to identify potential gaps. A full audit needs an agreed scope, documented observations, competitor comparison and an implementation roadmap. Ask what is included, whether execution is separate and whether ongoing monitoring continues after delivery.

Use our GEO pricing guide to compare audit, implementation and recurring support. The right level depends on your markets and capacity; a larger report is useful only if it informs decisions.

How to choose an agency

  1. Request a sample report. Look for evidence and prioritised tasks, not only a visibility score.
  2. Ask how prompts are selected. The sample should reflect your offer and customer questions.
  3. Check repeatability. Ask how variability and unanswered prompts are handled.
  4. Separate measurement from attribution. A mention is not a visit or a sale.
  5. Confirm execution responsibilities. Your team should know who changes the website and who approves claims.
  6. Check data ownership. Make sure you can retain the findings and understand the calculations.

Proprietary software can be helpful, but methodology and usable evidence matter more than whether a tool was built in-house. Crescendo uses Clairon as part of its visibility work; coverage and reporting requirements should be confirmed in the proposal.

What happens after the audit?

Start with factual errors and important pages that are difficult to understand or discover. Then address missing buying information, connect related content and review relevant third-party business information. For software companies, our GEO approach for SaaS gives examples of product and comparison assets.

Track completed work separately from outcomes. AI referral traffic and qualified enquiries help connect visibility work with acquisition, while GEO review milestones help set realistic expectations.

Frequently asked questions

Can an audit guarantee that ChatGPT will recommend us?

No. It can identify observed gaps and propose changes, but the platform controls its answers.

Does it replace a technical SEO audit?

No. The two reviews overlap on website quality but answer different questions. Agree the technical checks included in each scope.
